Criteria/Insight - Self Portrait Book

Tue Nov 3, 2009, 3:01 AM
Many have asked about the criteria to be included in the self-portrait book I'm working on and publishing. Here goes:

I want self-portraits -- in any medium, abstract as well -- that SAY something about the creator in some way. Something that visually, emotionally really packs a wallop. Something that looks like the creator was DRIVEN to create it. Best reference is my growing self-portrait gallery -- I've been adding things I think meet the criteria. I do think I'm leaning more toward intensity as opposed to light and fun and sunny...think I wanna stick to the dark side of the street for the most part :-)

This started with a question: what drives us -- so MANY of us -- to create a self-portrait in the first place? What are we trying to get across? What are we LOOKING for in the act of doing it? There's some kind of unspoken need there, I think, to dig deeper into the who and what of ourselves. That quest is what I wanna see in the pieces chosen.

Keep sending your submissions, and look for a sneak preview of the book (PDF) sometime in the next month. We're getting there :-)

It's easy for most people to weasel out of their commitments, to their morals, their ideals, their promises, their dreams. They do it because it's a hell of a lot easier than walking the walk.

To me, this is not a fucking test. What you see is what you get, and with me you'll definitely get what you deserve.

Very good explanation, Joe.
ML had also alerted me...
I simply can't decide if any of my self-depictions
are anything but simple and incomplete building blocks, even though they all arose from some vignette...some from very lengthy decades-long vignettes...ha

well, I'd submit to you that to some degree, we ourselves are incomplete building blocks, despite our desire and efforts to become otherwise :-)

Works in progress, my friend. All of us.

Give it some thought.

...true of course...but I am still uncertain of the aesthetic
values of my early work...more than that, I know that the
aesthetics are weak, and that the vignettes cry out to be
put in more context...which is not impossible... I will see what
emerges, and will submit something...thanks for the
perspectives...
